2012: 419 people

2011: 515 people

2010: 536 people

2009: 471 people

2008: 523 people

2007: 496 people

2006: 596 people

2005: 539 people

2004: 570 people

2003: 597 people

Averaged together, that's 1.44 people murdered each day in the last 10 years, or 1.34 people murdered each day in the last 5 years.

Update:

There were 1.13 murders per day on average in New York City in 2012. 253/414 were shot. The chances of being murdered by a stranger are minimal. Central Park was the safest precinct.
