In the Periodic Table of the elements there are 7 periods and 18 groups. The rows are called periods and columns are called groups. You may be getting confused by the lanthanides and actinides. These groups of elements are found in two rows at the bottom and seem to not be a part of the table. However, if you find and extended version of the table you will see that, technically, these two rows belong in Periods 6 and 7.

They have simliar properties and same elements although later on more elements were added to the modern periodic table.=Both periodic tables have elements grouped by similar properties. Mendeleev's periodic table had elements arranged in order of increasing atomic mass in columns with similar properties. While many of the elements are in order of atomic mass on the modern periodic table, some are not, as the modern table has elements arranged in order of increasing atomic number.=

Modern periodic table is based on modern periodic law which states that physical and chemical properties of elemnts are periodic function of their atomic numbers.
