The time periods of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic are subdivided into early middle and late instead of named epochs as they are in Cenozoic periods is due to the basis of the occurrence of particular fossils. It is also based upon the absence or appearance of geological horizons.

The Cenozoic is really the only era divided into epochs because a lot happened in a relatively short amount of time. The Earth cooled drastically and mammals rapidly grew and diversified into all the forms we see today in only 65 million years (if you call that short!). We also have a richer fossil record from that time because it is the most recent. So if there is greater detail in what happened it would be necessary for the three periods to be further divided into seven epochs.

This is a useful classification scheme that highlights important and distinct time periods. Throughout the history of the earth, there have been significant changes in climate and species. Dividing the history of the earth into ers allows for these differences to be more readily understood.

What is the periods of Cenozoic era are subdivide into?

Tertiary

What is Earths most recent era?

We are currently in the Cenozoioc Era (sub-era Tertiary); the era is divided into 3 periods, starting with the Palaeogene, then the Neogene, & now the Quaternary period. The era before this one was called the Mesozoic Era

Mesozoic era and Cenozoic Era

What years did the Cenozoic period exist?

What does not occur During A Cenozoic era?

Several periods of mass extinction

Why is the shortest era on the timeline the Cenozoic era divided into so many smaller divisions?

You can't say it's the shortest, its length is unknown as of now because the Cenozoic era isn't over yet. But it is divided into smaller sections because the most geological and biological changes have happened during the Cenozoic Era, so they break it up, get it?

How many periods are in each era?

there are different periods in each era. In the Cenozoic era, there are 2 periods, Quaternary and Tertiary. Mesozoic era has 3 periods, Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic. Paleozoic has 7 periods, Permian, Carboniferous, Devonian, Silurian, Ordovician, and Cambrian. Precambrian is just the present, no time periods in it.

What era occurred before the current era?

The current era is Cenozoic era. The preceding era was Mesozoic era. However if you are looking for periods in Cenozoic era, the current one is Neogene period, the preceding period was paleogene period.

What are the names of the eras?

The Eras go like this: Precambrian Era Paleozoic Era Mesozoic Era Cenozoic Era Dinosaurs lived during the Mesozoic Era, and we live in the Cenozoic Era. Paleozoic means "ancient life" Mesozoic means "middle life" Cenozoic means "recent life" All eras end in a huge disaster

Eras are divided into periods which can be further divided into?

Eras divide into periods and periods divide into epochs. The Palaeozoic Era is composed of the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian periods (in that order). The Mesozoic Era is divided into the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The Cenozoic Era is divided into the Tertiary and Quaternary periods. The Tertiary period is divided into the Palaeocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene epochs while the Quaternary period is divided into the Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. Note that eras are not the longest lengths of time. Eras may compose longer stretches of time known as eons/aeons.
