Amazon is the best place I've found to get the Lego Advent Calendars. They carry the new calendars and many of the past years' calendars if you want to collect all of them. Their prices are as good as I've seen anywhere and you can sometimes even get free shipping. I've purchased many items through Amazon, and have never had a bad experience with them.

There is no real average for the amount of pieces in a LEGO set. This is due to LEGO sets varying in size from 100 pieces to 15,000 pieces, most however seem to be at around the 500 - 1000 piece mark.
Lego first came to the shops in the 1960's and the standard Lego set contained 25 pieces. There are many Lego sets available on the market but the standard Red Lego bucket contains 480 pieces, whereas the yellow bucket contains 607 pieces and the blue bucket contains 700 pieces. So there is no real standard as the application dictates the size of the Lego bucket.
