The Earth's crust is a series of 'plates' moving on a molten surface. These plates slide against each other, and friction causes pressure to build up where the plates meet. Eventually, the pressure becomes so great that the plates 'snap' past each other. This releases the built-up pressure which we feel as tremors.
Although it seems impossible, the continents and sea floor form a series of plates that float on the Earth's mantle. The mantle is heated form below (the core of the Earth is molten) and this causes the mantle to convect (like a boiling pan of thick soup). The convention happens only very slowly but as it does it moves the surface plates about. The plates move at about the speed your fingernails grow.

This will form a series of tensile features. Initially, normal faulting will occur, then horst and graben structures will form and ultimately a rift valley will develop.
A few things can happen when plates collide. The most well known is a phenomenon called subduction where a denser plate is pushed underneath another where it melts and is destroyed in the hot mantle. Another phenomenon is called mountain building where neither plate is pushed under the other but they are merged together in a series of broken sheets and folded into mountains.
