Updated Answer Consuming poppy seeds prior to taking a drug test can and in most cases depending on how many you have consumed, will show a false positive for opiates. Opium latex can leech onto the seeds while the seeds are still contained in the plant. This causes a small amount opium to coat the seeds in the plant and if the seeds are not properly washed before being used in food, bingo, failed test.
