There are about 4,500 priests in Ireland but the numbers are falling quickly due to a high number of deaths and a low number of ordinations. For example, only 9 priests were ordained in Ireland in 2007 (when 162 priests died). This is a shockingly low number of ordinations especially given the relatively high proportion of the population that goes to church. In Sweden, where about 5% of the population goes to church and which has double the population of the Republic of Ireland, over 50 priests were ordained into the Church of Sweden in the same year. Of course, the Church of Sweden allows the ordination of married men and women. Time for the Catholic Church to wake up and allow the same.
