He was one of the Founding Members of the Reform Party, and became the leader of its successor, the Canadian Alliance in 2002. The Canadian Alliance merged with the Progressive Conservative Party in 2003, forming the Conservative Party of Canada. Harper was elected leader of the Conservative Party in 2004.
