If so the major advantage of software is that it can handle complex calculations to show the project's critical path. These calculations can be done by hand, but become very difficult when you are dealing with projects with hundreds of tasks. Software also takes into account working hours, can handle resources not working full time on tasks, deal with holidays and calculate project costs. That said software won't manage your project for you and MS Project in particular requires specialised knowledge to get the most out of it.
