Protons and ElectronsThe number of protons in an element is always the same as the atomic number, which is just 1 in this case. In a neutral atom (no charge), the number of electrons equals the number of protons, so it will be 1 electron also. Sometimes an ion of hydrogen (having lost an electron) is just called a "proton" since that's all it is (usually no neutron either). NeutronsHowever, the number of neutrons depends which isotope (atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons) of hydrogen we consider. Not all hydrogen atoms have the same number of neutrons. The vast majority of hydrogen atoms (over 99.98%) have no neutrons at all. Some have 1 (and this is called deuterium) and some have 2 (called tritium). These two isotopes occur naturally but are found in minute quantities.

To determine the number of neutrons in an atom, you must use the mass number, which is the sum of the number of protons and the number of neutrons. Since the atomic number of the element (for H, the atomic number is 1) tells you the number of protons, you can find the number neutrons by subtracting 1 from the mass number.

Hydrogen is composed of one proton and one electron. Some isotopes of hydrogen are slightly different. Deuterium contains one proton, one neutron, and one electron. Tritium contains one proton, two neutrons, and one electron. Deuterium and Tritium are found in nuclear fusion reactions.

The simplest of all atoms, the Hydrogen atom is comprised of a single proton with an electron in orbit around it.

As a gas it exists as a diatomic molecule H2, yet it is very-most commonly found, as part of an aqueous (in water) solution, in its ionic state H+ , or more accurately depicted as H+H2O, or H3O+, the Hydronium ion.
