SP-III This is the only fluid compatible with Hyundai/Kia and Mitsubishi transmissions. It is only available at their dealerships and will cost about $6 a quart. The good news is you only need 3-4 quarts to drain and refill the transmission which you should do about every 30k.

The pan (usually black in color) on the bottom of the transmission serves as a reservoir for transmission fluid. Keep in mind that that it holds only about half of the total transmission capacity.

No. Use only the recommended fluid (from the dealer) or risk destroying your transmission. Seriously.

if the transmission fluid level is full, than more than likely you have an internal failure in the transmission. this unfortunately is a common problem with hyundais.

All Hyundai vehicles use SP-3 transmission fluid. It is usually Diamond brand. The only place to get it is at the dealerships. Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi all use the same fluid. The transmissions are very sensitive and will fail if other fluid is used. Castrol makes an import fluid but I have heard several places that it is not compatible. The fluid is fairly expensive at $5-8 a quart but it only takes 3-4 quarts to drain and refill and that is quite a bit cheaper than replacing the transmission. It is strongly recommended to replace the fluid every 30k miles. There is a 17mm drain plug on the transmission pan just like the oil has.

The transmission on a 2002 Hyundai will have a drain bolt located underneath it. Loosen the bolt and drain the old fluid into a pan. Once done use Hyundai recommended transmission fluid and pour it in.

6.45 US qts total ( rebuild trans and replace TC), 3.2 qts if you drop the pan and replace the filter, 2.8 qts if you just drain the pan.
