How did Elvis Presley's career begin?
In August 1953, Elvis recorded "My Happiness" at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee. The record was a birthday gift for his mother and was not meant as a public record. However, it did surface in the 1980s after Elvis passed in 1977. The owner of Sun, Sam Phillips, was not in at the time he recorded this song but the secretary, Marion Keisker, was and liked Elvis' style and wrote down his name. When Sam was looking for a singer to record a song for him, Marion suggested Elvis. Sam called Elvis and had him come down to the studio. He did not record the song to Sam's satisfaction, but he still felt that Elvis had something so he teamed him up with guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black. In July 1954, Elvis, Scotty, and Bill had been trying many different songs to see if they could make a record but nothing was working. During one of their lunch breaks, they started to fool around with and old blues song called "That's All Right." Sam Phillips was very impressed and immediately recorded it. Sam brought the record to a local radio DJ. by the name of Dewey Phillips. He played it over the air and it immediately had a big reaction. Enough so that Elvis was called into the studio for an interview. After that, the boys started to tour and make more records and history was made. Elvis became the biggest star of the 20th century selling over one billion records (more than any other artist in history) an starring in 31 feature films as an actor. Sadly, he passed away of a heart attack on August 16, 1977 at the age of 42.
