I have serial # 1185 man. by F.N. , if that gets you started. I also have one man. by Remington in 1937. In total there were 85,000 of this design made between 1910 and 1951.
Only Remington knows.
Depends on the model.
Remington did manufacture a John Browning designed rifle. The Remington Model 8, semi-auto rifle was made from 1906 until 1936. The improved version, the Model 81, was made from 1936 until 1950. Remington also manufactured the Browning designed Auto-5 shotgun under their name as the Model 11 in various grades and gauges.

Remington Works - 1914 (late)
The Remington model 510 Target Master was made from 1939-1962.
Do not see a 543 in any of my references. Sorry-Sportsman is associated with the Remington centerfire rifles in Model 76, 760, and model 78.
Need a model, serial numbers are not unique accross rifles. RW is Remington Works
The serial number of Remington rifles will not give you the date of manufacture. The two or three letter code stamped on the base of the barrel will tell the year and usually also the month of manufacture. On a Remington 121 this letter code OS usually on the left side of the barrel right next to the front of the action. I have a 121 with the letter code "OF". This indicates that my gun was made in July of 1937.
