The Buddha did not prescribe a specific number of rules for achieving enlightenment. Instead, he taught the Eightfold Path as a guide for living a balanced and mindful life, which includes practicing right understanding, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration.

In many different ways. Thousands of monks and nuns are said to have attained enlightenment. Perhaps the most radical impact was found in the person of Angulimala. Angulimala was a mass-murderer who wore a necklace with one tooth from each of his victims. He met the Buddha, and attempted to kill him. Instead, the Buddha persuaded him to give up violence. Angulimala became a Buddhist monk and eventually attained enlightenment.
