well i know in Alaska the salmon travel from the interior of Alaska to the Pacific Ocean. That means from Fairbanks to the ocean, however far they choose to go in the ocean i don't know. From Fairbanks to Anchorange its about 250 miles so that should give you an idea since Anchorange is by the ocean.

They probably have to remember where they were born.
They migrate thousands of miles and for som animal that small, it's a long journy. The monarch butterfly will migrate halfway around the world. Many will die on this trip but it's all for survival purposes in the end.
