Three B-29's flew the mission and the "Enola Gay" dropped a "Little Boy" type atomic bomb. The other two were Photography and record radiation readings. Three other B-29's flew weather reconnaissance missions over other target cities and one B-29 was ready on stand by if the "Enola developed mechanical problems and had to return to Tinian Island. Protocol was to dump the armed bomb in the ocean if it couldn't be delivered as it was too risky to have an accident and wipe out the 20th Air Force on the island.
