The turning point was on the 7th December 1941. On the 7th of December the Japanese bombed the American fleet of ships at Pearl harbour in Hawaii. It was supposed to prevent the U.S fleet in the pacific from stopping the upcoming Japanese actions. Around 200 U.S. aircraft were destroyed, almost 2,500 Americans were killed and around 1,300 wounded.
The 7th Fleet did most of the gunline work along the coast.

The US got officially involved in the war when the Japanese bombed their Naval Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7th, 1941.
The 7th Fleet operated in the zone known as the Southwest Pacific Area (SoWesPac), which was under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. The area encompassed Australia, New Guinea, the Netherlands East Indies, Borneo, French Indo-China, the Philippines, and the South China Sea. The main strength of the 7th Fleet was concentrated in battleships, escort carriers, and submarines to support MacArthur's campaigns in the area.

One hour after the attack, Japan declared war on the US. On 11th December 1941, Germany also declared war on the US. Therefore Japan and Germany were the main opponents of the US during World War 2.
