There were many people and much confusion. One account bases the act of them firing because of the sheer confusion. Another states that one man dropped his gun and it went off, spurring the others to follow suit by shooting into the crowd.

In my opinion, it was more of a well done publicity stunt by the patriots, than a massacre by the British, because in my mind 5 deaths is by no means a massacre, especially if it was in self defence.
