I assume that you mean how many exemptions you should claim when you fill out Form W-4 for your employer. Claiming zero (0) will result in the largest refund, but it also means they will be taking more out of your check each payday (smaller paycheck, but bigger tax refund).

ANSWER: Doesn't anybody ever wonder why it is that taxes you pay on income can lead to a refund at the end of the year? What other kind of tax operates in this fashion? If you are an employee and you believe your employer has the legal authority to withhold taxes on behalf why can't they just take out the exact amount you owe each week and leave it at that? Doesn't it strike anybody out there that this sort of scheme is like the shills who play three card Monte? Pay us some now and if you're lucky you'll get some or all of it back at the end of the year. Hell, if you know how to play the system it's actually possible to get back more than you paid in!! What a country!!!

What if your son is 17 and working can you still claim him and his income on your 2009 income tax?

Yes as long he and you meet the qualifications for you claim him as your qualifying child dependent on your income tax return. He would have to file his own income tax return reporting his own income and he would not be able to claim himself for exemption amount on his own income tax return.

Can you claim your mother on my income tax?

No. My mother would not let me let you claim her on your income tax return. Even if I could claim my mother on my return I would not let you claim her on your return. My mother will be claiming herself on her own return. Nice try though. If you are interested in possibly claiming your own mother on your own return, I would recommend reading the Form 1040 instructions for line 6c, step 4. In a nutshell, if your mother lived with you all year, had minimal income, and you provided over half her support, you may be eligible to claim your mother on your return.

Do I have to to file income tax returns for state of Maine if i filed a federal tax return and and have 0 adjusted gross income?

If you are a residentof Maine who is required to file a federal income tax return, you must file a Maine income tax return. If you are not required to file a federal return, but do have income subject to Maine income tax resulting in a Maine income tax liability, a Maine return must be filed. You do not have to file a Maine income tax return if you meet all of the following requirements: 1) your Maine taxable income is $2,000 or less, 2) you claim yourself as an exemption on your return, AND 3) you are not subject to the Maine Minimum Tax. However, you must file a return to claim any refund due to you.

If your child has a job can you claim them on your income tax?

Yes as long as you and your child meet all of the rules for you to be able to claim your child as a qualified child dependent on your 1040 income tax return. You child will file the child's own 1040 income tax return and will have to make sure and check the box that says they can be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayers income tax return and the child will get the 3650 exemption on the child's own income tax return. The number of exemptions will be -0- zero WHEN the 1040 income tax return is completely correctly.

Does being 16 and in full time education and working affect the family tax credit?

This should not have any affect on your parents income tax return if you are still their qualifying child dependent on their 1040 income tax return. And of course you do know that if your are their qualifying child dependent that you can NOT claim your self on your own income tax return for the exemption amount when your income tax return is completely correctly.
