Through the slaves brought to the Caribbean from West Africa. In Jamaica, for instance, the Ashanti's, a Kingdom in the Akan Empire brought the stories to Jamaica. The majority of Jamaican's are Ashanti. The stories also reached the Americas by the slaves brought there. They soon evolved into the Brer Rabbit stories.

It is uncertain of the exact number, but it is estimated that there were 600,000 slaves brought from Africa. This made up about five percent of the total number of slaves.
Slaves from West Africa were initially brought to the Western Hemisphere by the Portuguese. As far as the British Virginia colony was concerned, a Portuguese slave ship brought slaves there in 1619. The slave trade continued and soon the New World had a large population of African slaves.
