The Chinese tiger, which is also known as the South China tiger, historically lived in various regions across southern and central China. However, due to habitat loss and poaching, their wild population has significantly declined, and they are now considered functionally extinct in the wild. Conservation efforts are being made to reintroduce them to suitable habitats in China.

According to recent counts, the South China tiger is already probably extinct in the wild. However about 50 tigers of this subspecies survive in zoos and there is at least one program preparing captive-born South China tigers and their offspring for reintroduction.

The South China subspecies may be extinct in the wild, but efforts are underway to re-introduce captive born South China tigers into their former haunts. They will probably be the next to go. How sad :(
