there were originally five, but Challenger and Columbia were lost. now there are three still in operation - Atlantis, Discovery, and Endeavour. Another shuttle exists, Enterprise (the first one), but it is not space worthy and was designed for glide tests and fit checks. it has, however, been flown by astronauts, so it deserves mention.
