By the story line 6 but i do know that there are lots more because of the last level there are randomly generated Spartans (Not Main Characters)and there is Master Chief as an Easter egg in a pod So im guessing that there are Over 50 in the storyline but Noble squad was important (ELITES)so that's why there death was such a big deal....But in the game there is probably 10 11 mayby 13 Spartans
