Many have recognized two subspecies of the Giant Panda, or the Ailuropoda melanoleuca, using the color patterns and variations, DNA testing, along with skull measurements. The Ailuropoda melanoleuca melanoleuca, have the black and white patterned colors and are found in Sichuan. The Ailuropoda melanoleuca ginlingensis, which are in the Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi, have a dark brown, and light brown variation of the color pattern, and it's skull is a bit smaller.
