Answer
Nine, though this is disputed by some scientists. All the species can interbreed.
G. c. angolensis (Angolan or Smokey giraffe)
G. c. antiquorum (Kordofan giraffe)
G. c. camelopardalis (Nubian giraffe)
G. c. giraffa (South African or Transvaal giraffe)
G. c. peralta (Nigerian or West African giraffe)
G. c. reticulata (Reticulated or Somali giraffe)
G. c. rothschildsi (Ugandan, Baringo or Rothschild giraffe)
G. c. thornicrofi (Rhodesian or Thornicroft giraffe)
G. c. tippelskirchi (Masai or Kilimanjaro giraffe)
Answer
There are 9 subspecies of giraffes, the Reticulated, Nigerian, Nubian, Smoky, Kilimanjaro, Rothschild, Kordofan, South African, and Rhodesian giraffe, but they may have other names, the Reticulated can be called a Somali, the Nigerian can be called a West African, the Smoky can be called an Angolan, the Rothschild can be called a Baringo, the Rhodesian giraffe can be called a Thornicraft. Not everyone agrees on this, some scientists disagree and say that some of the subspecies listed above are actually the same, it all depends.

There are eight. The Reticulated Giraffe is the one most people see and associate with giraffes. However, there is also the East and West African, the Rothschild (also known as Baringo or Ugandan because of territory), the Masai (darkest coloured), Nubian (one of two, the second being Masai, possessing what's called an oak leaf pattern to their coat), Smoky (or Angolan), Kordofan, and Rhodesian, or Thornicroft.
Both the W. African and Nubian have less than 250 remaining in the wild, with few records of captivity for either. Rhodesians have no records of being kept in zoos, with only 1,500 remaining in the wild. The Rothschild, Smoky and Somali giraffes are the only ones not in danger.
