One regular U.S. postage stamp (which currently cost 44 cents as of today, February 17, 2010) is all you need to mail a letter anywhere in the U.S.
This is true unless the letter is over a certain weight. I'm sorry, I'm having trouble finding out what that weight is. But if it's just a normal letter (a few sheets of paper inside a regular white envelope) then it should not cost more than 44 cents.
If the letter weighs no more than one ounce, it takes one 41 cent stamp.
The number of stamps is not dependent upon distance but on the weight of the mailing material.

For standard US Mail, a single 45 cent postage stamp will get it delivered.
A single first class stamp will do

Usually just one, but the price of it would depend on the size and weight of the letter, take it to a Post Office and they will tell you the cost.

The number of stamps is irrelevant. The cost is dictated by the weight of the letter and the method by which it is transported.
