The U.S. flag had 38 stars from July 4, 1877 until July 4, 1890.
When President William Harrison left office in 1841, the U.S. flag had 26 stars. The 26 stars represented the 26 states in the Union at that time, with Texas being the most recent state to join on December 29, 1845. The flag would later be updated as more states joined the Union.
