The U.S. flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes from June 14, 1777 until May 1, 1795 and 15 stars and 15 stripes from May 1, 1795 until July 4, 1818.
Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States on March 4, 1861, at which point there were 33 stars on the United States flag. As of July 4 of the same year, a new flag was introduced, with 34 stars, due to Kansas being added to the union.

There were three versions as more states were added. The Flag looked like the one we have today except it had 33 stars. Two Rows of 7 stars then 1 Row of 5 stars and then 2 Rows of 7 Stars. Then on 4 July 1861, Kansas became the 33rd state. The center row had 6 Stars. Then on 4 July 863, West Virginia was added as 35th state. This gave the flag 5 Rows of 7 stars on each row.
13. The number of stripes represent the original colonies, so they never change. The number of stars, represent the states so that if some break away like the confederates did, the flag would have to be redone.
During the first four months of Abraham Lincoln's presidency, the official U.S. flag had 33 stars. Four different designs of 33-star U.S. flags were used from July 4, 1859 until July 4, 1861. For the next two years, from July 4, 1861 until July 4, 1863, the U.S. flag had 34 stars arranged as two rows of seven, one row of six, then two more rows of seven. For the rest of Lincoln's presidency, and until July 4, 1865, the U.S. flag had 35 stars in a seven across by five down arrangement.
