Only if she wants to. Women don't have a magic gene making us happy to be stay at home moms. Many have spent years to get educated for their dream job and if staying at home for years they risk losing their job and promotions. Children of working mothers thrive just as well as children of stay at home moms. The dad can stay home if he wants to. I'm sure that could get rid of the "social ills," too. That could actually be the cure since we hear so much about absent fathers these days. More dads need to step up. And this we have numbers on. The majority of teen moms don't have their fathers in their lives. Something to think about.
Childcare can be very affordable if you find the right place. there are many stay at home moms or babysitters out there just looking to make extra money, while doing what they love. So it can be quite affordable.
This answer may depend on the area that you live in. I live in the suburbs of detroit, and I have been staying at home since my daughter was born six years ago. I thought stay at home moms were a dying breed, but I was surprised to see so many other moms not working as well. In the communities I have lived in, I would say about one third of us were stay at home moms, and the remaining two thirds seemed to be working outside the home. Some women were working because financially they had to. However, several women worked because they did not want to be at home full time with the kids. It is very stressful, I agree. It takes a certain kind of person to want this exhausting task. I even heard some women say, "once my kid was six weeks old, I was running back to work". So, I started to realize, it's not for everyone. For me it was the right choice though. I was 30 when my daughter was born, and already had my Master's degree under my belt. Two years later, having a severely impaired son cemented my decision to remain staying at home.
Nearly all had either wives, children, moms, dads, sisters, uncles, or aunts (and so) on back home.
