An Ensemble This actually depends upon how many people you have, and what kind of instruments they are playing. A large group playing traditional European instruments is called an orchestra. A smaller group playing traditional European instruments is called an ensemble. A group playing more modern music is called a band.
Over the past couple hundred years, the orchestra added more winds and brass. As such, more strings were needed for everything to be in balance.
An orchestra is made up of several families of instruments: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Examples of string instruments are violins, violas and cellos. Some woodwind instruments are clarinets, flutes and oboes. The percussion family includes cymbals, timpani, snare drums, and many other instruments.
A full-size orchestra consists of about one hundred musicians, who play instruments in the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections. There are also chamber orchestras, which are smaller and consist of fifty musicians or fewer.
Depends on the orchestra size. The sections are : Violins, 2nd Violins, Violas, Cellos, Double-basses. Sometimes a harp.
An orchestra is a sizable instrumental ensemble that contains sections of string, brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. A band is usually a smaller group of musicians, often with no stringed instruments, while an orchestra may have up to hundred or so members. Bands have existed for centuries, as they accompanied armies in the field and were used as signaling devices. Thus they tended to focus on loud instruments such as brass and percussion. More modern bands used primarily for entertainment, have come to include some of the quieter instruments. Because of their size, modern orchestras are fewer in number and require more support from patrons than do modern bands.
The number of musicians for an orchestra is usually determined by the composer who will specify which instruments and how many of each is necessary to do his/her work justice.
String FamilyIn a symphony orchestra, the following stringed instruments are used in varying numbers:Violin, viola, cello, double bass, and sometimes the harp.(Woodwind, string, brass, percussion )(apex)instruments traditionally included in the string family include but are not limited to: Violin, Viola, Cello, Upright Bass, Guitar, Harpsichord, electric bass, autoharp, harp, lute, mandolin, banjo, dobro, ukulele, sitar, balalaika, zither, cimbalom, baglama, bouzouki, and many more. piano and dulcimer NOT string instruments because even tough they do have strings, they are struck with mallets, not plucked or drawn with a bow.
