The Ukulele comes in pretty much any color you would wish. They can be painted in hundreds of colors, though they are often natural wood stained in traditional instrument patterns such as the sunburst.

The typical standard ukulele has four strings. There are versions that will have six or eight, in some cases doubling up on some of the notes. There are ukuleles made with 5, 6 or even 8 strings. The paired strings are so close together that they are essentially played as a single string.

There are versions that will have six or eight, in some cases doubling up on some of the notes. I have seen a 5 string ukulele, where the top string was doubled, giving it a high and a low G. Ukuleles have 4 strings

There are many different types and combinations can lead to lots of variation:

There are four primary sizes:

  • Standard aka Soprano
  • Concert
  • Tenor
  • Baritone

And there are several other varieties, with two main other sizes, the Bass Ukulele (which is bigger and not technically a ukulele as the tuning is very different and akin to a Bass Guitar) and a smaller sopranino which is often tuned in different, higher tunings and often to a whole octave above the soprano. The sopranino, or piccolo uke appears to be gaining popularity and videos can be found of them on YouTube.

And there is also the banjo ukulele or banjolele.

They can be acoustic, electric or combination.

There are many types or options:

  • Standard - often called the figure eight, or 'double bout' and looks like a standard guitar shape.
  • Boat paddle
  • Cut-away - essentially a standard with a part of the top of the uke removed to allow access to lower frets
  • Flying-V
  • Pineapple - essentially a boat paddle shape
  • Cigar box - they are made from old cigar boxes!
  • Bell

This doesn't include the many novelty shapes that are out there.

There are the normal 4 string models but there are also5, 6 and 8 string models which double up extra strings, rather than adding strings to be played separately. The exception is the Guitalele which has 6 individual strings, but is not really a ukulele.

And the colors and patterns are unlimited with all of the natural woods and plastics and fully painted models and those with strange decorations.

The standard ukulele has four strings. By using the frets, you have a huge variety of notes and chords that can be created.

A typical ukulele has 12 frets. With four strings that means 52 notes that can be played. Some have as many as 17 frets which would mean 72 notes.
