it was actually a pagan tradition. Romans beat their victims until the eyes began to roll back in their head, supposedly leaving enought strength to carry the cross.

∙ 13y agoI don't think The Bible tells us exactly how many times Jesus was hit with the whip. But the Roman soldiers were experts as causing the maximum of pain with any number of torture devices. It is quite possible the skin was stripped off His body.
