It depends on which school you attend. Some schools only give you a certain number of subjects to choose from.
Basically In 2011, we have to do english, science, maths, physical education and religious education. these subjects are compulsery. I think you have to choose 4 subjects as your options. if you want to go to university (this is the new rules) you must do a language and history or geography. then i think you have t choose 2 other subjects which i am confused about?
in AS level you are required to choose at least 4 subjects. The year after you drop one subject and carry on with the three.

It depends where you live,if you live in the u.k, i think you can choose in year 9,10,11 i`m not really sure because i am not in year 9 yet.
Study more and choose subjects that is required to by a doctor in year 11.
