Almost one million people die from suicide each year. That is, on average, about one death every 40 seconds. Each year, more die of suicide than of war and homicide combined.

Suicide is among the top three causes of death among those aged 15-44 years in some countries. It is the second leading cause of death in the 10-24 years age group. These figures do not include suicide attempts which are much more frequent than successful suicide. Depending on the study, there may be ten to twenty times the attempts when compared to completed suicides, if not more.

In 2004, worldwide, suicide was estimated to represent 1.3% of the total global disease burden.

In the United States, the suicide rate has sharply risen each year and accounts for roughly 2% of overall deaths.
