Most Spanish speaking people have two surnames. Spaniards have three names. A given name, followed by the father's first surname, and ending with the mother's first surname. None of the names change with a marriage. For example, if Fernando Pena Reyes (father) and Maria del Pilar Serrano Ortiz (mother) have a son Juan, his entire name would be; Juan (given name) Pena (father's first surname) Serrano (mother's first surname). Incidentally, Maria del Pilar is one name even though it's three words. Women frequently have first names with multiple names, i.e. Maria del Carmen, Maria Victoria, Maria Christina etc.

In Spain, people typically have two surnames: the first surname is from the father and the second surname is from the mother. These surnames are passed down generationally.
