Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) wrote over one-thousand compositions. A catalog numbering system was created in 1950 by Wolfgang Schmieder and each composition was assigned a BWV number.

BWV is the German acronym for Bach-Verke-Verzeichnistranslated: Bach Work Catalog. The numbering system grouped works thematically, so they are not in any chronological order. Thus, a low number as in BWV 232 does not necessarily mean that this was an early work of JS Bach.

The present BWV catalog indicates there were 1,127 works written by Bach.

It should be noted, though, that a small number of these works are now thought to have been attributed to Bach in error, and that many of his works are known to have been lost after his death, meaning that the total number of works he actually wrote is significantly higher.

According to BWV catalogue, J.S. Bach wrote 1127, but in fact he wrote much more. Many of his works have been lost forever so nobody really knows how many pieces he composed. I would expect around 2000!

Answer 1 : There are over 1100 known compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Answer 2 : There are believed to be 1,336 works by the great German composrer Johann Senastion Bach. These include 1128 of his known compositions listed in the most recent BWV catalogue, including the spurious works in the BWV Anhang. His full range of compositions include works for voice, works for organ, works for keyboard, chamber works, Orchestral works incuding Brandenburg Concertos, overtures and Suites, Canons, and Contreapuntal works

There are also another 208 works attributed to Bach but defined in IMSLP Petrucci Nusiv Library as "fragmentary, Lost, Doubtful, and Spurious Works" and an uncertain number of works of other composers he arranged, but these cannot realistically be counted in the tally of Bach's own compositions even though he wonderfully enriched the existing forms by his harmonious daring, contrapuntal cimplexity, mastery of structure and depths of expression.

During his lifetime between 1685 and 1750 AD, as a Master of organ building and playing, but rather surprisingly he was then relatively neglected as a composer and published very little. However long after his death, throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries many of his previously inpublished works were discovered and his greatness gradually became acceoted and his works accorded their due recognition.

But like many of the world's other most outstanding composers, J.S. Bach assimulated the styles and structures if his predecessors and contemporaries , an important factor being his copying and arranging of the works of others, for example the Concertos of Vivaldi which influenced his own music.
