The old name used historically was actually the 'man-eater' shark. The confusion is some other shark species are referred to as a man eater at various times. However the white shark was actually called the 'man-eater shark'. This name was felt to give them a bad image, and many others felt was undeserved. So it started being referred to as the great shark, great white shark, and great blue shark. Great white is the one that appears to have stuck.
A great white shark does not have gils. Gills, not gils, are the respiratory organs found in fish that allow them to breathe underwater by extracting oxygen from the water. Great white sharks have five pairs of gill slits on the sides of their heads for this purpose.
