Horses (of any breed) can have up to 44 teeth, which are broken down in the following way:

12 incisors

24 molars

4 canine teeth (also called 'tushes'), which are only found in stallions/geldings (boy horses)

1-4 'wolf' teeth, which are usually pulled because they interfere with the bit when riding.

An adult gelding has the same amount of teeth as a stallion; between 40-44. 40 normal teeth, that include the 12 premolars, 12 molars, and the 12 insisors. Then, most male horses will have an extra 4 teeth called "tushes". They may also have up to 4 wolf teeth, but these should be removed because they interfere with the bit.

ANSWER

It really depends on the type of horse. Some can have more teeth than others. Most horses have 36 teeth but can have up to 44.

Oddly, a mare will have less teeth because they do not usually get their wolf teeth, or what we would call canine teeth.

Ponies have teeth for chewing grass. If they ate meat they would have sharp teeth. They might have 30 or 40 teeth but I'm not sure

How does a horse change when it ages?

* Well, not ALL horses go blind, lose their teeth, and get weakened bones. That happens to some horses, depending on their "careers". One way you can tell a horses age, is by looking at their front 12 teeth. These teeth are called incisors. As horses age, their incisors sort of cave in. Below I have added a diagram, to give you an idea: *A horse changes when it ages by: going blind, loosing their teeth, and weekining bones.
