The question as I understand it is how long can someone be president in the United States. That answer is up to 2 terms of 4 years each for a total of 8 years. Or, if the Vice President takes office, he could run that term plus 2 more. Ending up with more than 8 years.

Running the country may be overstating it a bit; presidents aren't nearly as powerful as some people think. The term limit is currently 2, and a term is 4 years long. However, if a vice president-then-president serves anything less than one half of the initial president's term, then that president may (I believe) serve two terms of his/her own. This has never happened so whether or not it would be allowed is yet to be seen. If this can happen, then theoretically a president could serve for 10 years. It would be (we hope) accidental and is not something any candidate could legally plan on.
