To my knowledge, Yule (winter solstice) has never been on 25 December. The date of the winter solstice changes year to year and falls between the 20th and the 23rd of December. For all intents and purposes, many people observe Yule on the 21st.

'God Jul' is not a German expression, it is Swedish (the Danish and Norwegian expressions may also be the same or similar). It means 'Merry Christmas' (literally 'good Yule') and the pronunciation is something like 'got yule'. The way to say 'Merry christmas' in German is 'frohe Weihnachten'.

How do people in Hawaii celebrate Christmas?

We spent a Christmas there one year. The celebration included a lot of fireworks. As I recall, the streets were littered the next morning with the remnants of exploded fire crackers, small ones. It's pretty similar to most American Christmas celebrations. There are Christmas lights and decorated trees, but there isn't necessarily turkey for dinner. It could be a pizza. There's also no burning of the yule log.You don't need snow to celebrate Christmas.... Plus "Santa" can do anything

Why did Christians start celebrating Christmas?

In paganism it is known as Yule and it has existed since before recorded history, so there is no record of who came up with the idea of when to celebrate and how to celebrate yule. We just know that the traditions of Yule have been based down through time for millennia .

Why is merry Christmas hyvää joulua in Finnish?

"Merry Christmas" is called "hyvaa joulua" in Finnish because "hyvaa" means "good" and "joulua" sort of means "Christmas". More specifically the word "joulua" means Yule in English. The term Yule or Yule-tide comes from an old Germanic midwinter festival (involving a sacrificial feast), that has absorbed into Christmas. Originally the festival was celebrated between late December and early January on a date determinded by the lunar Germanic calendar, but the festival was later placed on the 25th of December when the Christian calendar was adopted. The term is still used in the Nordic Countries to refer to Christmas. As in Finland they use the same term in countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. In Finland they say "hyvaa joulua" (as you know); in Norway nad Sweden they say "god jul"; in Denmark they say "glædelig jul"; and in Iceland they say "gledileg jol". The term meaning the same thing ("good Yule/Christmas") in all these languages.

What is on the 25 of December?

Most northern cultures recognised the middle of winter in some way and held a festival. Western European tradition is closely linked to the Scandinavian Yule festival and the German tradition of tree-worship. The ancient Romans celebrated the Winter Solstice on this day in honor of the "Unconqured Sun". In addition, a very popular Mystery Cult devoted to the Persian god Mithras also honored him that day. Further to the above... Yule is celebrated at the Winter Solstice, on or about the 21/22 of December. The Roman celebration of the Invincible Sun was held at approximately the same time (variation occur because the ancient Romans did not use the Gregorian calendar). December 25 was the birthdate of Mithra, a Pagan God worshipped in the religion of Mithraism.

What popular pagan did Christmas replace?

Christmas is celebrated around the world on the 25th of December. It has a number of commonalities with several Pagan holidays but as Yule is still being celebrated (at the Winter Solstice, on or about the 21st of December), I don't see that it has been replaced. ANSWER its not the winter solstice it repalces, they just happen to be around the same time In ancient Babylon, the feast of the Son of Isis (Goddess of Nature) was celebrated on December 25, it was a time of party hard and drinking and basically merriment
