To be a Master of split takes a long time . You can master a split for 1 year if you practice everyday. If you have a ballet or gymnastic lessons for at leat 3-6 years for sure can do split but not a master of it. If you graduate ballet for sure you can do master split .
It's not so much a question of how many you have to take, but how many the school will allow you to take and how many you have the time and money to do. However, if you wish to go slow, make sure you understand how many years the school will allow to graduate. Some schools have a five year cut-off, some have more or less.
