In most cases, this depends on the tolerance levels of the patient both physically and emotionally. Each course of chemotherapy weakens the immune system and general energy reserve for each organ and system affected. That is why repeated courses of therapy are usually cycled with off-periods of weeks to months, to allow recuperation of the patient without significant re-growth of the cancer (hopefully). The only exception are the "red meds," like doxorubicin or daunorubicin. these tend to have lifetime limits of 400mg per patient due to the cumulative cardiac toxicity on the heart.

Can You mentally support a Chemo therapy patient without affecting yourself?

Everything an individual does affects them; good or bad. To support a Chemo patient means to be there through the good and bad times they may have. Chemo (depending on how much Chemo they will be getting and the length of time) can leave the person feeling sick to their stomach; weak; sometimes depressed and in some cases the loss of hair; perhaps eyebrows and eyelashes can cause further depression. If you feel you can be there 100% for them then you should be. Many Chemo patients are amazing and take their treatments with few complaints.

How do you get past the fear of chemo?

I am writing this from my own experience. I am a 2x breast cancer survivor and had chemo both times. I got over my fear by thinking it will kill the cancer and I will live. I have a supporting husband and great doctors and nurses. Chemo is not as bad as it used to be many years ago. There are many drugs available now to counteract some of the side effects. Also everybody is different, side effects can be minimal. Chemo is not easy, but it kills the cancer. If you are the person that fears chemo go to the American Cancer Societys website and look for a chat room for the perticular cancer that you need chemo for, read some of the Q and A that patients and survivors post it will be of great help. The more you know the better the understanding. YOU will survive.
