In Mark's Gospel, the first New Testament gospel and major source for the other gospels, Jesus takes pains not to refer to himself as the Son of God. Instead, he uses terms such as "Son of man." Even the disciples are never allowed to call Jesus the Son of God, as if a direct statement of this claim would have been dangerous around 70 CE, when this gospel was written. However, outsiders such as demons and the high priest could be used to make this claim. On two occasions, God himself announces that Jesus is his beloved son, in whom he is well pleased. Most importantly, Mark uses a framework parallel structure to develop and emphasise the concept of Jesus as the Son of God. Apart from the parallel structure, these were copied by the authors of the other gospels, although at that stage it had become possible for the authors to have the followers of Jesus refer to him openly as the Son of God, as if the authors no longer had to write indirectly about Jesus' divine status.

A parallel structure is a literary sequence in which an opening set of events is contrasted with another, parallel set of events that mirrors the first. In Mark's Gospel, notice that the voice of God from heaven calls Jesus his beloved son in whom he is well pleased (events C, C'); demons fall down and call Jesus the son of God but he commands they tell no one of this (H) and in the matching event H' Jesus emphasises that there is no one good but God; Jesus asks who do people say he is (S) and in event S' the high priest provides the answer to this question; Peter calls Jesus the Christ, but not the son of God (T) but later denies him (T'). When Jesus is speaking he refers to himself as Son of Man, not as the Son of God, for example in event V:
