Sharks don't sit down for regular meals, they just eat as opportunity provides. In fact, other than the occasional mating, eating is pretty much what shark (and for that matter, all fish) are all about. Perhaps the question should be "How MUCH does a thresher eat?" That's a matter of speculation but one guess is that an adult eats his body weight every ten days. Compare this to a human who eats his body weight in 65 days. Remember that a shark moves constantly, never resting, its whole life.

Is it possible to see a Thresher Shark while diving?

The answer is Yes! However it is EXTREMELY rare. There is only one place in the world you can be sure to see them diving and that is Malapascua Island, Cebu Province, The Philippines. Unusually the Pelagic Thresher Shark comes to shallow waters in Malapascua every morning to have parasites cleaned from their skin. Divers can predict this behaviour and see them. Evolution Resort on Malapascua is the most experienced operator in the world for Thresher Shark encounters. They can show normal Advanced Divers a Thresher every day but are the only operators to log frequent shark sightings in Malapascua from 30m to 100+m thanks to their unrivalled Technical Diving unit. This is how you can see Thresher Sharks diving.

How high can a thresher shark jump?

On Mon., Nov.2, 2009 at approximately 10am I saw a thresher shark approximately 7 feet long overall, jump, flip and spin about 6 times in a row. It got about 3 feet in the air, enough for its whole body to clear the water as it performed its awesome gymnastics. It was not as graceful as a spinner dolphin but certainly spectacular. This took place about 1 mile from shore off the coast of Huntington Beach, CA, on a sunny day with very little wind and nothing else going on nearby. I was delivering a catamaran from Long Beach to San Diego and travelling under power. At one point, the shark was about 20 feet from our bow then stopped jumping as we went by.
