It depends: if you are being active it speeds up; if you are sleeping, sitting, or standing still, it would slow down.

The resting heartbeat can be anywhere between 60 and 90 beats for an average human adult, and can become as high as 200 beats or more. This elevated rate (tachycardia) is dangerous in adults, less so in children.
