He composed his first feature film in 1967 with Valley of the Dolls (1967) (which was nominated for an Academy Award). His body of work includes Jaws (1975),E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), the Star Wars (1977) trilogy,Superman (1978) and the recent Harry Potter films. For years he's captivated live audiences as the conductor for the Boston Pops.
