Mayor Menino was Boston's longest serving mayor-- he served from 1993 through the end of 2013. He could probably have been re-elected for yet another term, but due to ongoing health problems, he decided not to run again, and Martin J. Walsh was elected Boston's new mayor. He took office in January 2014.

Thomas Jefferson had not yet been elected as President or as any other type of colonial official when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. He was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, but he was appointed to that position, not elected.
