Early in the revolution, thousands of Americans signed oaths of loyalty to the king, in return for a promise that their homes, families, wealth and business would not be interrupted. It did not work out well for many of them because their "protectors" turned around and looted their homes and farms and according to newspapers of the times "ravaged the women."
