As an adult it's pretty serious. If you are asked "Did you intend to steal before entering the store?" and you reply "Yes" they also sting you with burglary. Shoplifting is a crime of moral turpitude, which until expunged is a very bad thing. Most places will not hire you. Retail stores hold various databases of shoplifters. The fine somewhere along the lines of $1000 and 48 hours of community service. If you have mental illness and suffer from kleptomania, you might get a lower sentence. If you have a lawyer, which I suggest getting, as $500 is cheaper than $1000 you will also probably get a better sentence. Good luck and don't steal. Crime doesn't pay.

It all depends on the store policy. Some of the things that can happen to shoplifters are:They may be arrested and paraded through a store in handcuffs. They may face charges for theft. They may be banned from stores or malls.People who have been arrested for shoplifting - especially if it's more than once - may end up with a criminal record. This can make it harder to get a job, get into college, or do the other things they want.Additional Information:When deciding if someone is shoplifting a merchant follows 6 steps before deciding to stop someone suspected of shoplifting:You must see the shoplifter approach your merchandiseYou must see the shoplifter select your merchandiseYou must see the shoplifter conceal or carry away or convert your merchandiseYou must maintain continuous observation of the shoplifterYou must see the shoplifter fail to pay for the merchandiseYou must approach the shoplifter outside of the storeA merchant statute gives the store operator the right to "detain" someone temporarily either for the purpose of recovering their merchandise and/or for summoning the police. To detain someone, under the statute, means that they are not technically under arrest, but merely being temporarily investigated. If the store policy is to make detentions and arrests, then written reports are required to record the shoplifting event.Added: SHORT ANSWER - You have committed the crime of Larceny anytime you take merchandise from a retail establishment and carry it past the last possible point of payment. Whether it is Petit Larceny or Grand Larceny depends on the cost of the merchandise you stole. While some establishments MAY have internal company policies that determines how they handle shoplifters, you can not bank on the infomration outlined in the first answer as applying in all circumstances.

You can be charged with many crimes in Juvenile Court and zealous advocacy is essential to ensure that what took place becomes a problem of the past with minimal effect to your future. As a juvenile no matter what the crime you have a full life to live and you shouldn't begin it with a criminal conviction. You also have to be aware of collateral consequences. For example, if you're charged with a crime and you're a student in a public school you could be expelled. If you are expelled or suspended then I am ready to defend your rights before the school superintendent or principal.

my wife was charged with shoplifting about four years ago we never received a court date so we thoght the charges were droped due to lack of evidence.she was involved in a miner traffic altercation and was informed that she had a warrant for her arrest. she has never been in trouble with the law before and the shoplifting charge was really weak.now we have to go to court on 10-28-2008 and she's really worried. please help us if you can with some information on this matter. thank you verry much
Depends. You might get a fine, or for greater offences maybe some kind of community service, or for the "bigtime" you might get a jail sentence. Its up to a court. Sometimes for minor offences the Judge will give you a slap on the hand and a firm talking to and let you off.
