Their father died when Jefferson was a very young boy, and Joseph, who was many years older and a successful person, raised Jefferson and paid for his education and generally acted as a father to him. Jefferson Davis idolized Albert Sidney Johnston, who was an older student when Davis first went to Transylvania College in Kentucky, and whom Davis followed a few years later to West Point.
